6. Citytrip to Hanseatic Bremen – Outside of the City Center
Early rise quick shower and ready to go. Breakfast on the go. Early morning light is just like early evening light really beautiful …
One thing that I love, really love about Germany, which I miss in The Netherlands is that they almost everywhere offer a large cappuccino and when I say large I actually mean LARGE. A large cappuccino fits in a cup as large as a small soup bowl. Drinking that will get you going through the morning hours …
The breakfast at the Bremen Central Railway Station …
This day The Wandelgek wanted to spend outside of the city center.
After breakfast he first walked through the station to its backside and a bit further to a large park he had seen on a Bremen map. After exiting the railway station, the park is a bit to the right …
Walking through the park there suddenly was a loud noise like something snapped then some scared shouts and a bang. It quite startled him. Walking a bit further The Wandelgek saw that some bikers had stopped for a picnic underneath a large tree and one of the largest branches had suddenly snapped and fallen down. Most of the bikers had immediately reacted and had been able to avoid being hit, but one woman was hit and had gotten her leg stuck and probably broken because she was in pain. Everyone had been lucky though because the bikes were heavily and irrepairably damaged. An ambulance was called and they were quickly present.
It was a bit of a rainy day …
So after having walked through the complete park, The Wandelgek went to a park restaurant named Haus am Walde for an afternoon lunch.
Before getting there he spotted this bike service station, which was a really cool and innovative attribute to support bikers. The Bremer Stadt Musikanten on a bike was a hilarious addition.
The restaurant was at the edge of the park and it had an outside beer garden …
The food was really delicious and there were combinations with scrambled egg, olives, mushrooms, tomatoes, vegetables and cheese …
After lunch it still rained and it was not gonna stop the next hour so The Wandelgek decided to visit the nearby Universum Bremen, which was like a technology museum, run by the Bremen University.
Best were the many visual tests that visitors could try …
… and some hands on electricity circuits to try out …
It kept raining and The Wandelgek decided to call it a day and returned to the railway station and next to Paddy’s Irish pub for a few beers to end the Bremen Weekend …
Paddy’s of course had a large amount of excellent Irish draught beers and because I had not tried O’Hara’s before, I ordered their Irish Red Beer.
It tastes a bit smoky and has some light caramel tones in it.
A dark porter or stout like O’Hara beer to finish the evening …
… before cementing some conclusions about Bremen.
Conclusions: Bremen is a very interesting city to visit and if you only visit for an extended weekend, like The Wandelgek did, you have nothing to worry about regarding the amount of beautiful locations to visit. It is helpful when you are interested in history though. The Wandelgek visted the Market square area, the Böttcherstraße, the Schlachte and the Schnoor quarter and all were worth the visit. Outside of the city center he visited the large Bürger Park Bremen, which around the Stadtwaldsee (City Forest lake) is a protected nature area, and the Universum Museum, which is a technical museum for experimenting (very suitable for a visit with young children too). The Wandelgek was most surprised though by the large amount of similarities with his hometown of Deventer, which is, like Bremen, a hanseatic town too. If you want to stay longer, there are more musea and some interesting locations, like e.g. an open air museum near Bremen. Concluding, this visit was very worthwhile!
The Wandelgek returned to his hotel for a good nights rest and left early the next morning, returning to The Netherlands.
THE END
